Watercolors & Drawings

Alison Rundle Clark

Having trained and worked as a professional musician, more recently Alison followed a lifelong ambition and attended art lessons, having been unable to follow both disciplines at school. She was fortunate in that her teacher, the late Tony Smith of London, was an inspirational and innovative influence, encouraging his pupils to experiment both in style and media. Alison has also had considerable instruction in the use of watercolor but intends now to concentrate on abstract form. She paints with a group who adheres to the teachings of their late teacher and is inspired to paint in a manor house in Oxfordshire, U.K. which is believed to have belonged to St Philibert in 1208 and later Richard the Second of England. (He is thought to have given it to his mistress!) The colors and forms Alison uses are influenced by these very English historic surroundings.

Alison Trowell Waterscape Series

Purchased in England in 2010, this series represents a style and mood that embraces the love of water and the interaction between land and sea. Alison Trowell is an established watercolor artist based in Oxford and has spent the majority of her life visiting remote and romantic beaches across Europe—discovering the mystique of the land and the sea. Her style very much fits into the English watercolor movement with her light brushes and color palette.

Hanriout Giraud Alligator

Christopher acquired these pieces in Paris and the originals are from the fresco designs from a church in St. Germain.

Hubbard Tulips

These images come from our large collection of Hubbard flowers. Born in the English city or Birmingham, Charles Edward Hubbard dedicated his life to studying natural history by intent to illustrate every flower that came from the ground. At 18, he went to work in the industrial factories, causing him to develop bronchitis and become homebound by his early 30’s. At this time, Hubbard began his work on thousands carefully drawn and catalogued studies.

Kachinas

We are introducing this collection of Kachina’s to our new “American Odyssey” series. In southwestern Native American culture, Kachina’s are visual representations of any natural occurrences, harvest crops, weather phenomenon and elements. Kachina’s are not worshipped, but respected as the life force within all these elements, reminding and inspiring us to do the same.

Leke Watercolors

Recently purchased in auction in London, these atmospheric and enchanting watercolors, which we believe are dated between 1907-1924, were painted by a British artist living in southwest England.  These pieces are deckled and floated on linen.

Myriorama Landscape Panels

This collection is derived from an early 19th century children's game where a continuous idyllic and primarily English landscape panorama is divided into 16 panels in which the elevations and details of the side edges all match, allowing the child to rearrange the panels to create a new and different landscape. There is a total of 1,902,071,808,000 different landscape combinations that can be created from the 16 panels! Published in London, 1824.
