The Frederick Steiner archive The Steiner Mill was based in the Alsace region near the French German border and we understand that the earliest of the papers in the collection date from 1780 to the early 1900’s. The family is credited with inventing / developing a light-fast natural Turkey Red dye, from roots of the madder plant, that had eluded chemists in Northern Europe for centuries. Frederick Steiner was an avid collector of French textile designs that he used for his textiles, celebrating the Art Nouveau style, which was in vogue in France in the 1920’s.
